As with most manufacturers there are multiple options when choosing an MFD or Chartplotter for your boat.  B&G actually makes it fairly simple.  They currently have three series (really 2) so its a matter of choosing which series is best and then what version within that series.

The series are as follows:

  • Zeus3s
  • Vulcan
  • Zeus 3 Glasshelm

Each series has various size ranges:

  • Zeus3s  9",12" & 16"
  • Vulcan 7", 9" & 12"
  • Zeus 3 Glasshelm 16", 19" & 24"

If you don't have the real estate for 16"+ Multiple displays you will most likely be looking at the Vulcan or Zeus3s series.

Let us take a look at the Vulcan Series first:

B&G recommend the Vulcan series for Coastal Cruising and Club Racing.

For less than one boat buck ($1000.00) you can have the 7" model.  Which is very budget friendly for a MFD / Chartplotter.

The Vulcan series has many of the features common in the industry and is a touchscreen only design.  There are no knobs or buttons on the side.

The Vulcan series has all of the dedicated sailing features that B&G are known for (SailSteer, SailingTime, RacePanel, Laylines).

The Vulcan Series comes in 9" & 12" versions as well.  These are also full of features and simplistic at the same time.

Installation is simple, if you are planning to use it as a Chartplotter you just have to connect the power, you can tap into other features either using B&G instruments, radar or sonar.  You can also link other manufacturers products via NMEA 2000.

The Zeus3s series is the Bluewater Cruising and Regatta Racer MFD/ Chartplotter  of choice.

One of the most distinctive features of the Zeus3s series is that it is has a touchscreen as well as rotary dial and keypad.  When you are in challenging conditions this series will continue to function.

The Zeus3s stands above the Vulcan series with an uprated processor, screen and more features.  You can network your screens and components through the B&G ethernet connections (Radar, Charts, etc).

The Zeus3s has many of the above features built in unlike the Vulcan series.

You can also link other manufacturers products via NMEA 2000.

Lastly B&G like many manufacturers have multiple options and bundles to choose from.  Because B&G is razor focused on sailors specifically there is no need to figure out if the MFD is for a fishing boat or sailboat.  It is just important to see where the value lies.  With B&G the value tends to lie in the bundles.  In many cases if you are upgrading your MFD you will probably also want to upgrade your radar.  Here are a few examples of bundles that B&G offers:
